2012 Beneficiary: Don Bosco Training Centre, Ngariyan, Manipur
Located nearly 15 kms away from Imphal, the Don Bosco Training Centre at Ngariyan is one of the “intensive school programme” centres which gives chance to children, who have missed regular schooling for reason or another, to catch up with education. Run by Bosco Mangaal – a non-profit organization which is into a host of social activities in Manipur such as helping of poor kids who are deprived of regular schooling and supporting of children and people affected by HIV – the centre keeps about 30 to 40 children in the age group of 10-15 years together for a year.
The children are given education right from nursery level to fifth standard under an intensive one-year programme. During the course, regular tests are conducted and the successful children move up to the next level such as KG and so on till the end of the year, by which time they will be able to reach at least fifth standard level.
The centre was originally started in 1988 as a training centre for Salesian fathers and brothers. Today it is giving a chance to children who almost missed the bus to continue with the journey of education.
